The iPhone 6 Plus is a larger version of the iPhone 6 that fits into the increasingly popular phablet category. Apple announced the new iPhone 6 Plus along with the smaller iPhone 6 on September 9, 2014.
While both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus are larger in size than previous generation iPhones, the iPhone 6 Plus offers a new "Retina HD" 5.5-inch screen with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels in comparison to the iPhone 6, which features a 4.7-inch display with 1334x750 resolution. Both devices also feature a Sapphire glass front that curves slightly around the edge and that is claimed to be shatterproof and water-resistant.
Features in the iPhone 6 Plus
Some of most publicized features in the iPhone 6 Plus include support for the new iOS 8 operating system, which includes the new Apple Pay mobile payments service (along with a Near Field Communication antenna for long-awaited NFC support), an A8 64-bit processor, an enhanced 8MP iSight camera, and support for 150 Mbps LTE as well as 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Calling.
Like the iPhone 6, the iPhone 6 Plus also works seamlessly with the new Apple Watch wearable device that will be available for purchase in early 2015.
The iPhone 6 represents Apple's second largest departure in terms of design since the iPhone 4, and ushers in an era of rounded aesthetics. Equipped with a 4.7-inch display, the iPhone 6 is also much larger than its predecessor, the iPhone 5s, but Apple has managed to trim some extra fat in order to make the new iPhone even thinner, at 0.27 in (6.9 mm). The innards of the iPhone 6, too, went through improvements. The home-grown dual-core A8 processor is the third consecutive Apple chip to be custom-designed, and offers performance improvements of up to 25% and 50% in the of CPU and GPU departments respectively. The 8-megapixel, 1/3” iSight camera also received several upgrades, mostly on the software side, and now offers faster, phase detection auto focus, plus support for super-smooth 720p clips at the industry-leading 240 frames per second.
